Fall Prevention

Did you know that 1 in 4 Americans aged 65+ falls every year?

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans, but there may also be other risk factors that could lead to a fall including:

  • Arthritis
  • Weakness
  • Hip Fracture
  • Joint Replacement
  • Back Pain
  • Joint Pain
  • Osteoporosis
  • Parkinson’s
  • Strokes
  • Unsteadiness
  • Lower body weakness
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Walking or balance issues
  • Use of some medicines (such as sedatives or antidepressants)
  • Vision problems
  • Foot pain or poor footwear
  • Home hazards such an uneven steps or rugs and clutter

Preventing falls before they happen is the key to ensuring good physical health for older Americans. At Capitol Physical Therapy, we don’t want the fear of falling to slow you or your loved ones down.

Our team has developed an Evidence-Based Fall Prevention program to be utilized in conjunction with the normal course of physical therapy treatment. This program takes a one on one approach, designed to put safety first and ensure patients get and stay on their feet.

We provide education and training on:

  • Why falls happen
  • What to do if you or a loved one falls and how to get up
  • How to make your home safe from falls

Benefits of our program include:

  • Improving balance
  • Building strength
  • Increasing confidence
  • Reducing the fear of falling

Our Fall Prevention Program is covered by most insurances - if you would like more information about the program, please call us, or click here to download the fall-risk assessment checklist and talk to your doctor about your risk of falling today.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A physical therapy visit lasts about 45-60 minutes. The actual contents of the visit vary based on your diagnosis/need, but typically what happens is:

    • You check in with the receptionist, make any appointments necessary, and we discuss your health insurance benefits with you.
    • You go into the gym. You can change clothes if you need to, then begin therapy.
    • You perform several exercises and stretches. These can include therapeutic band exercises, body weight exercises, or weighted exercises.
    • The stretches and body weight or weighted exercises will promote strength, stability, improved range of motion, and pain relief.
    • We can initiate other techniques to include manual (hands-on) work, taping, dry needling, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, or blood flow restriction therapy, as needed.
    • The therapist makes recommendations based on your progress. These can include altering the frequency of visits, making additions/alterations to your home exercise plan, or things to do before your next visit.
  • We recommend budgeting 40-60 minutes for a typical therapy session. The only exception to this will be your first visit, which can take about 20 minutes longer due to the physical therapy evaluation your therapist will provide. We also recommend showing up about 10-15 minutes early to your first visit. This way, you can complete the paperwork before your visit time and streamline the process.

  • If we are asking you to do something that is hurting too much, let us know! Physical therapy should not be severely painful. It is not common to be so sore that patients are in pain or it affects their daily life. If this ever happens during or after an appointment, let us know and we will adapt your program.

  • During your initial evaluation, your therapist may ask you a number of questions to determine what the cause of your pain is. This can include questions about your sleep habits, activity level, and work environment. They will also ask for a medical history, and then typically ask direct questions about where and when you experience pain.
